NSF has embarked upon a programme jointly with the Uva-Wellassa University with a view to assessing and enhancing the research profile and capacity of academia and R&D institutions in Sri Lanka. It will examine the current status of physical, human and intellectual resources available in the said institutions and their research profile. The main objectives of the study will be as follows:
- To identify the high-profile senior research scientists to harness them for national development
- To identify up-and-coming promising scientists in the academia and R&D institutions so as to provide the requisite support for their professional growth and development
- To find out the sources (i.e. state, private sector, foreign) and magnitude of financial support currently received
- To ascertain the availability and utilization of high-end equipment in the said institutions
- To identify and enhance the competencies of the technical staff of those institutions for efficient utilization of high-end equipment while ensuring their minimum downtime
A preliminary discussion in this connection was held on 17 August 2020 under the chairmanship of Prof. Ranjith Senaratne with the participation of Dr. Pradeepan Thuraiyappah, Actg. LIbrarian, Uva-Wellassa University and Dr. Geethika Yapa, Head, Journal Publication Division and Mr. Manuja Karunaratne, Head, National Science Library and Resource Centre of NSF. Dr. Thuraiappa with his strong backgroundf in scientometrics, bibliometrics, webometrics and research evaluation metrics will make a significant contribution to this exercise. It is proposed to identify a contact point for each institution in consultation with its CEO to facilitate the study.
