The Department of Food Science and Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya commemorated the World Food Day on 16 October 2023 under the theme "Water is Life, Water is Food. Leave No One Behind" In parallel to this event, an exhibition was conducted to showcase the novel and innovative food products developed by its staff and students as well as the outstanding accomplishments of the Department of Food Science and Technology since its establishment in 1986.
The event was organized by Prof. Eresha Mendis with strategic support from Prof. Niranjan Rajapakse of the above Department who are within the top 2% of the scientists in the world.
The event was graced by Prof. Ranjith Senaratne, Chairman of the National Science Foundation as the Chief Guest. Prof. M.D. Lamawansa, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, senior academics, scientists from R&D institutions, corporate leaders of the food industry and students attend this important event. Emeritus Professor Upali Samarajeewa, the architect of the Department of Food Science and Technology delivered a speech online from Canada.
